Client Story: How A Single Blog Post = Page 1 Result On Google...

How can you format your Shopify blog posts to ensure the best results on Google?

One of my proudest results of this year is seeing one of my clients, SMALL-FOLK, change from not appearing anywhere on Google as a stockist for a certain brand, to now sitting comfortably on page one… all from a single blog post.

There are key elements to consider when setting up a Shopify blog post if you really want to make the most of your time and energy, and in turn to best influence organic search engine results. I have shared a brief insight into these steps below.

1. Research SEO keywords
Spend time reviewing your current positioning on Google vs others’ websites. Which key words and phrases can you see that they are using, and what phrasing would you expect a customer to use to find this result (and specifically you).

2. Map out original written content
Google (and other search engines) want to see that you are an ‘authority’ when it comes to this subject, meaning you have insightful information on your website that is easy to understand. To avoid more competition with other websites, you want to ensure that your written content is original with SEO keywords integrated throughout.

3. Add keywords to first paragraph
The first two lines of the blog post are the most important and where you want to make sure you feature core keywords, without sounding too contrived. Here is where you want to introduce the feature and what the reader can expect to learn.

4. Format images with alt text
You will want to take any extra opportunity to include further SEO keywords, and a great place for this is within images where alt text can be added. More importantly however, this is essential for accessibility within your webpage - meaning anyone using assistance software will be able to understand what the images are. Without this, or some sort of caption, bots won’t know what the image is of.

5. Add internal links
Including internal links is a good way to boost your authority. Consider where you can add direct links to products you are selling, or other pages within your website.

6. Edit excerpt and search engine listing preview
These are important aspects to rewrite to ensure the search engine listing preview captures the attention of potential customers. Here is where you will write a direct summary of what is included within the page, and how this is relevant to what the viewer will have searched for to find it. Think about how you browse - what is a deciding factor on which pages you choose to click on?

From here you will want to be checking in on analytics so you can make improvements and edits to phrasing over time. Be aware that positioning will change, so keep an eye on this and your competition. It can take approximately a week to see the updated results of edits, so plan accordingly.

There is of course much more to SEO and content planning than what I have shared above!
